McKinley Burkart creates cozy interior for Annabelle wine bar in Calgary
Annabelle is an intimate wine bar run by Leslie Echino, the restaurateur behind Calgary-favourite Blink. The bar offers a well-chosen wine list, Japanese whisky, gin and cocktails. Multi-disciplinary creative agency McKinley Burkart was asked to create an unusual design concept – the world’s tiniest wine bar.
“We were tasked with transforming a decommissioned hole-in-the-wall nail salon into a cozy space fit for sharing small plates and a curated wine list. We dove headfirst into an exploration of tiny bars around the world, from tapas bars in Barcelona to French brasseries in Paris. For this project, we wanted to carve a niche in a global culture of tiny casual dining. Such was born Bar Annabelle, a concept inspired by cool girls around the world. Taking on both the graphic design and interiors, our graphic design department Little Sister gave a distinctly stylish identity to Bar Annabelle, bringing the concept to life through feminine detailing with a retro flair. This carries through the entire project with a rich colour palette and quirky touches adorning the space. This small space called for creative planning, so we designed a unique peninsula-style bar, blurring the line between diner and bar-tender. Pink marble tables are hung off the wall with brass brackets, bringing beauty to something utilitarian. Finally, a cozy back room with low seating and glowing lighting beckons on cold Calgary evenings,” explains Walker McKinley, principal and architect of McKinley Burkart
