Haldane Martin Uses South African Design Throughout Kunjani Wines Restaurant

Kunjani Wines is a restaurant in Stellenbosch in close proximity to Cape Town, serving own wine from one of the most renowned wine regions in South Africa and an “east meets west” cross continental fusion menu. The project was completed by South African designer Haldane Martin.

“Kunjani Wines combines traditional architecture with contemporary design and a distinctive African aesthetic. Bringing together a collection of South African art and design, it’s a new contemporary design landmark for the Western Cape that draws visitors as much for its striking design as its tasting experience with a view. Kunjani Wines is the result of the marriage between a German entrepreneur and South African business woman – inspiring a Euro-meets-Afro design concept that draws on the bold, earthy and spicy characteristics of their flagship Shiraz. The centrepiece is the tasting and dining area, whose friendly atmosphere speaks to the greeting behind the Zulu word, Kunjani. Its expansive deck overlooks a breathtaking vista of the surrounding vineyards and mountains. Downstairs a cellar with tasting area showcases the wines on beautiful original leather and steel wine racks – a new design by Haldane Martin. The architecture’s Cape Dutch typology – laid out in an H-plan in the traditional Afrikaner style typical of the Cape winelands – was turned on its head by painting the building exterior charcoal (instead of white) and adding traditional slate stone cladding, with red sliding screens inspired by geometric patterns painted onto West African huts. The space is furnished with original designs by Haldane Martin, including the new Sim-Ply chair range, a folded steel lighting design, a Songololo Sofa, tetrahedral-based cafe tables and Zulu Mama chairs. Throughout the space notable South African design and art pieces firmly root the design within its local context,” explained studio Haldane Martin
