Cheese as Hero of Deli Store Design Concept
Healey’s Cheesery is a deli store on the Waterkloof Wines Estate, where customers can taste and buy Healey’s award-winning cheddar cheese in an idyllic farm setting, while experiencing cheese-making first-hand. The interior was designed by South African designer Haldane Martin.
“The deli looks directly into the cheese-making factory and maturing room. Through large windows, wooden shelves of cheeses are illuminated softly in an ethereal display. The design concept centres around oversized spruce timber echoing cheese wheels in scale and colour. The counter stacks the warm yellow timber, with exposed ends. Natural splits in the wood are inlaid with red resin, reminiscent of cheese wax. Upright table beams utilise thick spruce like large blocks of cheese. Café chairs are Ton’s Ironic chairs, a retro farmhouse chair painted red. Lighting also draws on this motif: round wooden pendants imitate traditional cheese moulds, hanging from exposed red piping, creating the sense of an old farmhouse while keeping the aesthetic light and contemporary. Raw steel is used on counter and table tops, in the counter legs and signage. Walls are exposed brick, with a charcoal feature wall to modernise the interior and signage emphasising the famous brand. Ultimately the space showcases Healey’s Cheese as the hero – in an interior expertly displaying the product and its making process while inviting customers to try cheese in a novel environment,” said
